That being said, joy and connection with others can feel out of reachwhen your capacity is threatened by internal processes such as self doubt, self criticism, or perfectionism. When we don’t trust ourselves, or we are afraid of disappointing others, being judged or rejected - sharing our concerns or asking for help can feel frightening. Instead of reaching out you may find yourself withdrawing from people, avoiding specific situations, or working hard to mask your emotions and control your thoughts. Sometimes these defense strategies can help us cope by providing short term relief.

Caught in the Tide

At other times, our defense strategies become maladaptive adaptive- stifling our growth, and serving as barriers to genuine self-reflection, authentic expression, and healing. Rather than feeling relief, we end up feeling misunderstood, alone, confused, anxious and often paralyzed.
